Attar vs perfume: what’s the difference?

At the Raza counter in Kalyan, the question we hear most is simple: should I take the attar or the perfume? Every fragrance in our collection comes both ways, so the choice is really about how you like to wear scent. Here is the difference, without the jargon.

The short answer

• Attar is a perfume oil. You dab a drop on your skin with a fingertip or the bottle’s applicator. It sits close to the skin, feels warm and personal, and a small bottle goes a long way.
• Perfume is fragrance in a spray. It spreads in a fine mist, opens brightly and fills more of the air around you.

Neither is “better”. They are two ways of wearing the same idea.

How they are made

Traditional attar is made by distilling flowers, woods, herbs or spices and capturing their aroma in an oil base. The oldest method in India is deg and bhapka distillation in Kannauj: plant material is heated with water in a copper still (the deg), and the fragrant steam travels through a bamboo pipe into a receiving vessel (the bhapka) that holds the base oil. Modern perfume is a blend of fragrance materials dissolved so it can be sprayed. How strong it is depends on how much fragrance is in the blend:

Strength, projection and how long they last

Projection is how far a fragrance reaches from your skin. Longevity is how long you can still smell it.

• Attar usually projects less: people notice it when they are close to you. Because it is an oil, it tends to stay on the skin a long time, and fragrance oils can last on clothes even longer.
• A perfume spray usually projects more, especially in the first hour, then settles.

How long any fragrance lasts depends on your skin, the weather and the fragrance itself. Woody, amber, oud and musk scents generally last longer than fresh citrus ones, whichever form you wear.

When to choose attar

• You want something personal and close to the skin: for prayer, the office, or long days.
• You like warm, rich scents: oud, amber, musk, rose and sandalwood feel especially good as oils.
• You want a small bottle that travels easily and lasts: a 6 ml attar is enough for many wears.

When to choose perfume

• You like a fragrance that announces itself: evenings out, weddings, events.
• You prefer fresh, sporty or citrus scents, which open beautifully as a spray.
• You want a quick spritz on the way out of the door.

Can you wear both?

Yes. Many of our customers layer: a drop of attar on the wrists or neck, then a light spray of the same fragrance, or a complementary one, over it. The oil helps anchor the spray.
