How to apply attar so it lasts all day
Attar is perfume oil, and it is worn differently from a spray. A single drop, placed well, can carry you through the day. Here is how we suggest wearing it.
1. Start with clean, dry skin
Apply attar after a bath, once your skin is dry. Fragrance holds better on skin that is clean and lightly moisturised: an unscented moisturiser helps if your skin is dry, because dry skin lets fragrance fade faster.
2. Use less than you think
One drop, or one stroke of the applicator, is usually enough for each spot. Attar is concentrated. Too much can feel heavy, especially in a closed room or in the heat.
3. Choose warm pulse points
Pulse points are where blood runs close to the skin. Their warmth gently lifts the fragrance through the day.
- Inside the wrists
- Behind the ears and the sides of the neck
- The base of the throat
- Inside the elbows
For men who wear attar with a beard, a touch on the jawline, not on the beard itself, works well.
4. Dab, don’t rub
Touch the attar on and let it settle. Rubbing your wrists together warms and breaks up the top notes, so the opening fades faster.
5. On clothes: test first
Traditionally, attar is also applied to clothes, often on a small cotton ball tucked into a pocket or on the inside of a collar or cuff. Fragrance oils can mark light or delicate fabrics, so try a hidden spot first, and keep attar away from silk and pale colours.
6. Layering for longer wear
To make a fragrance last into the evening, wear the attar first and spray the perfume of the same fragrance lightly on top. The oil anchors the spray. Every Raza fragrance is available both ways, so layering the same scent is easy.
7. Heat, humidity and the Indian summer
Heat makes fragrance bloom faster, so in summer:
- Use a little less than you would in winter.
- Favour fresher scents by day and keep deep ouds and ambers for evenings.
- Reapply one small drop in the afternoon rather than a lot in the morning.

8. Store it well
Keep attar bottles closed, upright and away from sunlight and heat: not on a sunny windowsill or in a hot car. A cupboard or drawer is ideal. Stored this way, a good attar keeps its character for a long time.
